The California Legislature is recently becoming more involved in issues around ADHD. In particular, there are groups lobbying strongly to make it more cumbersome to administer medications to school age children. We will keep you posted here about relevant hearings and legislative debate.

Look at these bills:

SB 1290; Signed informed consent required before prescribing psychotropic medications to minors. Targets ONLY ADHD and stimulants; Haynes - Hearings 5/15/2002

SB 1289; Prevents any school staff, even physicians, from recommending even continuing on psychotropic medications; Haynes - ON HOLD - Will be re-written to ask for a study, to see if the hysteria about forced medication is about something real.

SB 119; Requires a physical exam from a pediatrician before a psychiatrist can prescribe psychotropics to a minor; Haynes, this bill is now inactive.

SB 770; Restricts which personnel can administer medications at schools; Figueroa
